Toothaches are one of the more unpleasant experiences in life.  Dr. Rice has a virtually pain free treatment process to soothe you heal quickly from this troublesome condition.   There are several common causes for toothaches.

The most common cause of a toothache is tooth decay.  When a cavity gets close to the nerve of a tooth, it can cause the nerve of the tooth to shoot painful pulses into your jaw.  Sometimes, the cavity will not create pain in the tooth until the bacteria from the cavity infects the nerve of the tooth and creates an abscess in the jawbone near the tooth.

The second most common cause of a toothache is gum disease or periodontal disease.  Gum infections can loosen the teeth to the point where they just start to ache, or the infection itself will create swelling and pressure that will cause the jaw to hurt.

Another typical cause for a toothache is a cracked tooth.  Day to day chewing pressures can cause teeth to develop cracks that grow slowly over time.  This is common in molars with large fillings.  Eventually, the crack can start to aggravate the nerve of the tooth, resulting in a painful ache.

Toothaches can also be caused by trauma to the tooth.  Trauma from clenching and grinding, or just a plain old blow to the jaw can create inflammation around the tooth.  This inflammation can be very painful.

There are some conditions that can mimic the pain of a toothache such as sinus infections and TMJ syndrome.  A visit to your dentist can help you determine the cause and treatment for your toothache.  More importantly, your dentist can help you to avoid toothaches all together.
